Guardianship

Guardianship. Similar to third-party custody, guardianship is another form of custody that can be awarded to individuals who have established a child-parent relationship with a child.  This is typically done when the parents are unavailable to parent for a variety of reasons, and the prospective guardian has already been raising the child.  Depending on the circumstances, this can be a quick process or can take several months to establish.  Both third-party custody and guardianship cases are very fact specific, so it will be very important for us to thoroughly discuss your particular situation before deciding the best way to proceed.
